Special Exhibits at the Met

May 18, 2008

Saturday, I wandered over to the Metropolitan Museum of Art to check out two new exhibits: Superheroes Fashion and Fantasy and Jeff Koons on the Roof. The fashion exhibit’s goal is to “reveal how the superhero serves as the ultimate metaphor for fashion and its ability to empower and transform the human body.” It illustrates the second part clearly with all the awesomely armored gear. I still think it’s a bit of a stretch to call the superheroes’ battle between good and evil — in spandex no less — “the ultimate metaphor for fashion.” Regardless, the display is worth checking out before its Sept. 1st close. If Galliano and Jean-Paul Gaultier don’t ring a bell for you, you can still admire the actual Superman, Spiderman, Catwoman, Ironman, and Batman costumes worn in movies.

At this visit to the Met, I discovered the rooftop garden that offers a clear view of the skyline (I took the photo used in my blog header up there) and a sculpture exhibit by Jeff Koons that brings back memories of childhood birthday parties. I love how the sun bounces off the giant green balloon dog, against the oh-so-perfectly blue sky.

Pythons

May 18, 2008

Twice on Saturday I saw two different men with pythons casually wrapped around their neck. The first sighting was when I was walking down my street, heading back to my apartment. From a distance, I thought the snake was a stuffed animal, like the kind you win at the arcade games down the shore. But as we passed each other, I saw the tongue of the python moving and its head and tail twisting. I wrote it off as a freak sighting, considering I have also seen donkeys on my avenue. But I was wrong.

Two short hours later when I went back out to lounge in Central Park, I saw another guy with a python around his neck in Sheep Meadow, wearing swim trunks and shirtless. Clearly he wanted to attract attention from women…but maybe next time, use a dog?
